Out in the cold- pet owners unable to cope in economic crises

Animal charities and sussex vets have noticed that the Credit crunch is now taking our tolls to on our fluffy friends.

Animal shelters are reporting a disturbing rise in the amount of animals, in particular dogs and cats, that are being dropped off into their clinics. During this credit crunch, companies are struggling to make ends meet, people just cant cope with both their bills and the bills of their pets. The family pets are being dropped in the middel of no-where and left to fend for themselves or taken to animal shelters to be rehomed.

What has bought this on? This xmas you may have brought a pet for your family. Some are facing unemployment and the families newest face is suddenly unaffordable. Another reason is people are forced to downgrade to smaller living quarters which have a no pets policy.

Can the animal hospitals cope with this sudden influx of casualties?

Alot of animal charities and re-homing centres are close to full, now unfortunetly only taking in the most severe of emergency cases. Animal shelters are recieving less donations to, with the credit crunch tightening people’s belt and charities all round getting less handouts as people struggle to save themselves.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that January saw some shelters report a increase in people adopting animals, most animal charities are still seeing more animals arriving than going out.
